AYRTON SENNA

Ayrton Senna was a man who divided opinion like no other. But there was one thing that no one could deny: he was the fastest driver the world has ever seen. Ayrton won kart races from the moment he started competing at the age of 13. He was Brazilian champion as soon as he was old enough to race in the senior category.

He won the final British Formula Three round of 1983 to claim the title and the Formula One tests with McLaren and Williams that came with it. They were impressed, but neither signed him, leaving him to settle for a ride with little-fancied Toleman for 1984

A move to Lotus for 1985 brought Ayrton's first win. Then, at Monaco in 1987, he scored his fifth win, starting his love affair with the street circuit. He was to win there on five more occasions, but his rate of progress was insufficient, so he joined McLaren in 1988. Eight wins and the title were his reward. The next few years were his purple patch, with second overall in 1989 being followed by world titles in both 1990 and 1991.
