Ericsson's first taste of motorsport came when he was nine years old racing in karts. In 2007, he drove for Fortec Motorsport team in Formula BMW UK. Ericsson's first win came at the first meeting of the series at Brands Hatch where he took third place in the first race and won from pole position in the second race. That year, he became the final Champion of the British Formula BMW series.

In 2008, he joined Fortec's British Formula Three team. Two pole positions and a handful of podium finishes gave him fifth overall in the championship. In 2009, Ericsson won the Japanese F3 championship, and also won races when making guest appearances back in British F3. He consequently participated in the Macau Grand Prix where he qualified in pole position and finished the main race in fourth position.

In 2011, Marcus drove in GP2 Series for iSport, alongside Sam Bird. He finished sixth in the Asia series championship, and tenth in the main series championship.

In 2012, he stayed with iSport for the GP2 championship and got 1 win in Spa and 5 podiums. For 2013, he joined DAMS team.
