Esteban Gutiérrez started his career in 2004 in the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge. In 2006, Esteban won all 5 races in the Camkart Challenge Mexico, and again he raced in the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge. 2007 saw him step up into the single-seater ranks, competing in the Formula BMW USA series. He finished 2nd in the overall championship, with 4 wins, 8 podiums and 9 pole positions, earning him Rookie of the Year honours.

Gutiérrez moved across to Europe to compete in the 2008 Formula BMW Europe championship and won the championship. 2010 saw Gutiérrez move to the GP3 Series, competing for ART Grand Prix. Gutiérrez won the inaugural season with two races to spare by gaining Pole position in the final race weekend in Monza.

In 2011, for his first year in GP2, he scored his first points in the Valencia feature race, and followed this up with his first series victory in the sprint race, also setting the fastest lap.

2012 yielded three wins in GP2 and he finished third in the standings by the end of the year. He was considered the perfect fit for a F1 Sauber race drive in 2013.
